TROY, Ala. – With the Sun Belt Championships beginning in one week at Trojan Arena, the Troy volleyball team is just a win away from assuring a spot in the tournament enter this weekend's final regular season matches.
The Trojans travel to Georgia State on Friday for a 6 p.m. match and to WKU on Sunday for a 12 p.m. match. Troy enters the weekend in eighth place in the Sun Belt standings, two games ahead of Georgia State.Â
A win in either match this weekend by Troy, or a loss by Georgia State in either of its two matches, will guarantee the Trojans a spot in the tournament. At worst, Troy will finish the regular season tied with Georgia State for eighth place, which will bring the league's tiebreaking procedures into effect.
Troy (11-19, 6-10) could move as high as the fifth seed as they enter the weekend within two games of four different teams.Â
The Trojans are in their position thanks to two solid performances at home last weekend. Troy snapped a seven-match losing streak by defeating Arkansas State in four sets on Friday, then defeated UT Arlington in five sets on Saturday.
Troy is led offensively by Blair Winston and Marija Zelenovic who are averaging 3.67 and 3.51 kills/set, respectively. Winston has posted double-figure kills in each of her last six matches and in 11 of the last 12. Zelenovic has posted double figures in her last four and in 11 of the last 14.
Alexandra Alexander leads the Trojans and is third in the Sun Belt as she averages 10.68 assists/set in Sun Belt play. Alexander is also second on the team at 2.84 digs/set in league play.
Courtney Cohen leads the Trojans with 4.10 digs/set and currently has 1,999 career digs. She is one dig away from becoming the first Trojan and just the sixth player in Sun Belt history with 2,000 career digs.
Georgia State (9-21, 4-12) has lost three straight matches, but prior to that had won four straight. The Panthers will need to defeat Troy on Friday and South Alabama on Sunday to tie the Trojans for eighth place in the Sun Belt standings.
WKU (25-5, 15-1) has already clinched the Sun Belt Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's tournament. The Lady Toppers have won nine straight matches, all in three sets.
