Trojans Fall at Texas State in Four Sets

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy volleyball team dropped a tight, four-set match at Texas State on Friday, 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16), at Strahan Coliseum.
Troy (9-13, 4-4) hit just .045 as a team, but had chances in a match that could've gone either way. The Trojans had a match point in the first set, 24-20, but Texas State (14-9, 4-4) scored six straight to take the opening set.
The Trojans held the Bobcats to a .067 attack percentage in the second set and evened the match with a 25-22 win going into the locker room. Texas State, one of three new Sun Belt members in 2013, held the Trojans to .020 and .000 attack percentages in the third and fourth sets.
Marija Zelenovic's 12 kills led the Trojans while Blair Winston was also in double figures with 10 kills.
Courtney Cohen led all players with 27 digs while five Trojans posted double-figure digs. Ali Dowdall (19), Alexandra Alexander (16), Kelley Curran (16) and Zelenovic (14) were all part of a defensive effort that posted 100 digs and held Texas State to a .144 attack percentage.
Alexander posted her 14th double-double of the season with 32 assists to go along with her 16 digs. The Trojans' senior setter now has a double-double in three straight matches.
Molly Ahrens led Texas State with 14 kills and just two attack errors for a .400 attack percentage. Caylin Mahoney posted a double-double with 32 assists and a team-high 20 digs.
The win by Texas State snapped a three-match losing streak after the Bobcats opened Sun Belt play 3-1.Â
Troy continues its road swing at UT Arlington on Sunday for a 12 p.m. match. The match with the Mavericks will mark the close of the first half of Sun Belt play as Troy begins playing teams for the second time next Friday with a match at UALR.
