Troy Volleyball Knocks Off Georgia State

TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team faltered in the third set, but otherwise cruised to a four-set, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15), over Georgia State at Trojan Arena on Friday.
Troy (8-12, 3-3) evened its Sun Belt record with the last match of a four-game homestand coming on Sunday when ULM visits the Trojans.
"I thought we played really well tonight," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We did a lot of the things we've been working on in practice and I think that it really showed. I'm proud of our team for playing the way they did and we need to play even better on Sunday."
Troy got a complete team effort as the Trojans held Georgia State (5-15, 0-6) to a .121 attack percentage, including a marks under .100 in two sets. Troy posted a .282 team attack percentage, its best mark of the season, with 51 kills and just 14 errors.
Kayla Pickart led a balanced Troy attack with 15 kills while Marija Zelenovic posted 14 kills and just two errors for a match-high .364 attack percentage. Blair Winston was also in double figures for the Trojans with 10 kills.
Alexandra Alexander posted a double-double, her 12th of the year, with 45 assists and 13 digs. Courtney Cohen also posted 13 digs.
Kiah Cheatham led the Trojans with six blocks as Troy posted 11.0 total team blocks and Georgia State recorded just 3.0.
The Trojans hit .312 in the opening set and held the Panthers to a match-low .050 mark on their way to a 25-17 win. Troy continued the momentum in the second set and hit .400 with 13 kills and three attack errors on 25 attempts on its way to a 25-18 win.
Troy hit just .077 in the third set while Georgia State posted a .250 mark a took a tight 25-23 decision that included 11 ties, including as late as 23-23.
Troy rebounded in the fourth set and took control early, using a nine-point run to take a 10-2 lead on their way to a 25-15 win. Troy hit .400 again in the fourth set, this time with 16 kills and just two attack errors.
Georgia State was led by Dede Bohanon who posted a match-high 18 kills and Emily Averbeck who recorded a match-high 19 digs.
Troy returns to the court on Sunday when ULM visits for a 12 p.m. match at Trojan Arena.
