Complete Draw
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team began play at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional on Thursday. The three Trojans in the event all played singles matches on Thursday, with one advancing and one pushing the tournament's top seed to the brink.
Troy senior Sami Ghorbel received a first-round bye in the event before knocking off Alabama's Saxon Buehing in the second round, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Ghorbel moves on to face Malte Stropp of Mississippi State in the third round on Friday. Stropp is the tournament's third seed and is ranked 40th in the nation by the ITA.
Daniel Bustamante, a sophomore for the Trojans, also drew a bye in the first round, but faced Ole Miss' Nik Scholtz, the seventh ranked player in the nation and top seed in the tournament, in the second round. Bustamante held his own with the Rebels' junior before falling in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3.
Also in singles play, Mansingh Athare fell to UAB's Luiz Pinto in the first round, 6-3, 6-3. Bustamante and Athare will be moved to the consolation bracket, which will begin play on Friday.
In doubles play, Troy's pair of Ghorbel and Athare received a first-round bye and will begin play on Friday. The duo won't have an easy match, however, as they drew the tournament's second seed, Alabama's Becker O'Shuaghnessesy and Daniil Proskura in the second round. The Crimson Tide's top team is ranked 15th in the ITA's national doubles rankings.
