Troy Soccer Lends Helping Hand to Community

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team has spent the off-season training for 2013, but has found time to also support the local community, partnering with the Troy public library to help tutor local students.
“It's a great collaboration between the University and the county,” said Teressa Colvin, who helped to oversee the tutoring program. “They really helped to improve literacy in Pike County, with several students improving dramatically.”
The team worked with kids of all ages, from K-12, tutoring a variety of subjects. The athletes were often paired with kids based on their current choice of study, to play off of their own strengths in the classroom.
“We couldn't be more proud of the way our team took this on,” said head soccer coach Chris Bentley. “We are dedicated to our vision of being at the forefront of our conference in community service and this is a strong indication of that."
The program has been going strong for several years, offering over 2000 tutoring sessions per year. Such a large program needs plenty of volunteers, generally using between 100-150 per semester.
“It was great for the kids,” Colvin said. “It was very exciting because the tutors were athletes, so it was something different the kids could relate to.”
The Trojans finished 2012 with a 9-9-2 record, earning their fourth consecutive trip to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
