Two Trojans Compete at Samford Pentathlon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two Trojans competed at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday, in a pentathlon sponsored by Samford University. Veronica Bryant placed third, while Christina Barrett finished in sixth.
“We were delighted to receive the invitation to this event,” said track and field coach Jill Lancaster. “We have been training and working to start multi-events in the second week of February, but the opportunity arose for this event and we could not pass it up. The athletes executed very well on the things we have been emphasizing in training and also had good performances on things we have yet to emphasize. The other coaches and I are looking forward to future competitions where we can execute on all aspects of our training.”
Bryant placed third with a score of 3255 points. She tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters and finished in third in the shot put with a toss of 10.82 meters. She also picked up fourth place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (9.26 seconds) and the long jump (5.07 meters). She placed fifth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:49.67.
“Veronica had a great day and was spot on in the high jump,” Lancaster said. “She tied her indoor high jump personal record and was less than 50 points away from her all-time personal record.”
Barrett dominated the shot put with a throw of 11.38 meters. Her closest competitor threw 11.00 meters. Barrett placed fourth in the high jump at 1.57 meters and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.45 seconds) and the long jump (4.85 meters). She wrapped up the meet with a sixth place finish in the 800-meter, at 2:50.29.
“Christina was on today with the shot and her jumps,” said Lancaster.
The Trojans will travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to take place in the Arkansas State Invitational on Friday, January 25. For all meet information, make sure to check back on TroyTrojans.com.
