Troy, Ala.-The Troy men's and women's cross country teams continued to improve on the season as they competed in the Azalea City Classic Saturday morning.
“Both teams were hitting on all cylinders today,” said head coach Jeff Jenkins. “All but a few runners set personal bests; some ran significantly faster than their previous best. I saw exactly what I wanted to see before we head into our first training break of the season.”
The men's team finished third behind Auburn and South Alabama in the 8K race. They were led by junior Enock Kirui who finished sixth with a time of 25:59.37. Junior Kemper Morton also improved on the season, finishing 12th with a time of 26:23.50.
Sophomore Sam Ammons rounded out the top 40 for the Trojans finishing 35th with a time of 27:51.02. Freshmen Cameron Sanchez and Phillip Jones finished 42nd and 49th respectively with times of 28:18.00 and 28:36.10.
Troy's women's team finished eighth overall in the 6K race. They were led Saturday by freshman Julia Ostendorf who finished 15th with a time of 23:27.19. Senior Morgan Paulson recorded a top 20 finish at 18th with a time of 23:37.21.
Junior Haley Davies finished 43rd with a time of 25:09.97 with sophomore Kendall Harris finishing 66th at 26:13.35. Anna Claire Scarlett, Robin Blackman and Jackie Smith finished 83rd, 87th, and 89th for the Trojans.
The Trojans now take a break before their next meet will take place in Tallahassee, Fla., on October 5 when they compete in the Florida State Invitational.
“If all goes well, the fourteen runners that toe the line at FSU will have just survived some of the toughest training of the season,” Jenkins said. “If we can stay healthy through these next three weeks, then there will be significant performance increases.”
