DES MOINES, Iowa – Troy University senior Martins Pildavs earned All-America distinction after he finished 13th in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
“We are very proud of Martins and our staff that worked with him,” Troy head coach Jill Lancaster said. “Martins started off strong with a solid throw that gave him a lot of confidence. The positions continued to change as the second flight finished their throws leaving him in 13th place and just outside the finals.
“When you put on the uniform you go to win and Martins is very competitive. It will take some time for him to understand the significance of his accomplishments of earning second team All-America honors and finishing as one of the top athletes in the NCAA. This was a great day for him and the Troy Trojans.”
Pildavs had a strong start to the meet with a throw of 70.33 meters on his first attempt, which was the sixth best throw of the opening round from the field of 24 athletes. He followed with a throw of 69.62 meters with his second throw before fouling on his third and final attempt.
The Latvia native becomes Troy's third All-American over the past three years as he joins Leander McKenzie and Lemontray Stamper who earned All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Illinois State's Tim Glover won the national championship with a throw of 81.69 meters in the fourth round. The top nine from the first three rounds advanced to finals and received three additional throws. Pildavs finished just 2.06 meters out of 10th place.
