TROY, Ala. – Troy golf head coach Matt Terry has always emphasized academic achievement and given a great deal of support to athletes, but this year's group of golfers has gone above and beyond Terry's expectation off the field of play.
Seniors Haley Lawrence and Ricky Casko, who closed out their collegiate career's just two weeks ago, were recognized by the Sun Belt Conference for individual awards, as well as awards from Troy University.
Lawrence, a senior majoring in athletic training, was the recipient of the Sorrell Award. The award is given annually to a graduating senior with the highest academic GPA of all athletes.
“I have always thought about good grades and to be able to get into a good graduate program,” Lawrence said. “I never in my wildest dreams would have thought I would have received the Sorrell award.”
Lawrence's abilities shined not only on the course, but also in the classroom. She earned the honors of All-Academic Scholar four times and led the team to four wins in the last couple of years. In addition, she has been nominated for the Sun Belt Conference Sporting Behavior Award, which is based on outstanding leadership and achievement in the classroom, on the field of play and in the community.
“Everyone was excited for me to choose athletic training because of the demands the program itself,” Lawrence said. “Plus, playing a college sport has its own set of demands. Coach has been very supportive and worked with my athletic training schedule. He has always put a demand on school.”
Lawrence finished out her career at Troy with a 77.84 stroke average and an average finish of 23rd. During her final year as a Trojan, she averaged a finish of 18th and recorded seven top-20 finishes, four top-ten finishes and three top-five finishes. Her highest finish of her four-year career came in 2009 at the Troy Women's Invitational where she won the event.
“In the four years she has been here at Troy, she has improved every year,” head coach Matt Terry said. “We have seen Haley grow up right in front us both on and off the course. She has been a four-time All-Academic Scholar and she has helps lead us to four team wins in last couple of years.”
Casko, who graduates with All-Conference honors, has also had his share of success in his three years as a Trojan. The Cartersville, Ga. native finished his career with a 74.77 stroke average and an average finish of 39th. During his senior year, Casko averaged a finish of 24.7 with five top-20 finishes and three-top-10 finishes.
Casko's highest finish of his career came just a month ago at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate where he tied for fifth, when one stroke separated him from a chance at the title in a five-player playoff championship.
“It has been interesting to watch Casko grow,” Terry said. “He came here to Troy as an athlete that could play golf and he has grown into a golfer. We are excited to see him voted in by my peer coaches in the conference. This shows that other schools in conference have respect for Casko and have noticed his talents. He is the first guy since 2008, when Michael McGrady received the honor, to be named All-Conference. He is also leading the country in Greens in Regulations hit, which is awesome and we are proud of him.”
Even with Casko and Lawrence graduating, the Trojans have nothing to worry about on the course or off as they have underclassmen on the rise that have proven they are competitors.
Both the men's and women's team won the Fred B. Davis award, which is given to the teams with the highest GPA out of all sports.
The women finished with a 3.57 GPA and the men finished with a 3.27, which gives the men their second consecutive Fred B. Davis award.
Both teams also had a Freshman Impact Performance in the top 25% in the country, which is how well the freshman class helped the team in scores, according to GolfStat.com.
“Both our men's and women's teams are naturally self-motivated,” Terry said. “I have always encouraged good grades but this year I did not have push these guys and girls.”
Langley Vannoy and Tolver Dozier have also been nominated for the Sun Belt Sporting Behavior Award Team Honorees.
“Both of these teams strive to be the best they can be at everything that they do and it shows this year with their grades,” Terry said. “These teams are high achievers and we are excited for them.”
