TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team has been active in the Troy community during the offseason working with students at Troy Elementary School and with Big Brothers Big Sister of South Central Alabama.
The Trojans spent two days at Troy Elementary School in early April working to promote healthy lifestyles. Prevalence of obesity among children has more than tripled in the last 30 years. Aside from physical appearance, there are severe health risks associated with childhood obesity such as high blood pressure (hypertension) and type 2 diabetes.
"Our staff and student-athletes were fantastic putting this on," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "They could not have been more enthusiastic and professional. It is our hope that actively participating in fun physical activity with these elementary students will promote health and fitness as something they would want to do daily,"
The Trojans hosted another successful event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Alabama on April 21 at Troy University's soccer field.
"The children of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Pike County had so much fun at field day with the Troy soccer team," BB/BS Activities Coordinator Miki Sheppard said. "The soccer team was very inviting and made sure that all of our kids were safe and really enjoyed the day."
Little brothers and sisters (ages 6-16) were able to participate in a variety of games such as kickball, capture the soccer ball and others.
“We are very proud of the way the event was run this year," Bentley said. "The girls did an outstanding job and a big thanks should go out to Alpha Gamma Delta for providing the food as well."
The Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives.
By participating in our youth mentoring programs, little brothers and sisters are: more confident in their schoolwork performance; able to get along better with their families; 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs; 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; and 52% less likely to skip school.
“We are looking forward to working with the Troy soccer team in the future,” Sheppard added.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for new volunteers, if you are interested in please call their office at 334-566-2454.
