BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky's Emily Rousseau shut down the Troy bats for the second-straight game, and Kelsie Mattox belted a two-run home run to push the Lady Toppers past the Trojans, 2-0, Saturday afternoon.
Rousseau, who tossed her second-straight complete game shutout against Troy (23-14, 5-8), struck out six and walked none in seven innings of work.
For the series, Rousseau (11-7) pitched 12 shutout innings for Western Kentucky (24-15-1, 6-5-1) and allowed just two hits in her two starts.
Troy starter Ashley Rainey (12-7) tough the tough-luck loss, as the freshman pitched six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking none.
WKU picked up its only two runs in the bottom of the third inning, as Kelsie Mattox's bat propelled the Lady Toppers into the lead, as she sent a line drive over the fence in right center that quickly left the WKU Softball Field.
Mattox went 6-for-10 at the plate for the Lady Toppers, as the left fielder hit three home runs and picked up six RBIs in the series.
Rousseau faced just three over the minimum and kept the no-hit bid alive through six innings, but Nikki Hollett's leadoff single in the top of the seventh thwarted the no-hitter for the second game in-a-row.
But, WKU quickly end Troy's opportunity to tie the game, as Hayden Gann sent a groundball that bounced off Rousseau's glove in the circle and deflected right to a running Amanda Thomas at shortstop, who then tagged second and tossed across to first for the double play.
Rousseau coaxed another grounder, this time straight to Thomas, to end the game and preserve the shutout.
The Trojans return home on Tuesday, April 10 to face the Kennesaw State Owls in a doubleheader at the Troy Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
