Troy (20-24) became the first Sun Belt team to take a series from Florida Atlantic this season after winning the final two games of the series. The Trojans held the Owls scoreless over the final 14.1 innings of the series, including a 9-0 shutout in the series finale; it was the first time that Florida Atlantic had even been shutout in a regular season Sun Belt Conference game.
Thomas Austin started the dominance on the mound with 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen on Saturday to pick up the victory. The junior right-hander leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 2.19 ERA on the season and a remarkable 1.14 ERA in league games. Ryan Brady tossed the first six innings on Sunday before Nate Hill closed out the Owls over the final three frames.
The Trojan bats also played a big part in the series victory. Troy hit five home runs on the weekend, with all five coming from different players; Florida Atlantic had allowed just 10 home runs in 16 conference games entering the series.
Sophomore second baseman Tyler Vaughn hit .500 (6-for-12) against the Owls, while Chase Mathis drove in four runs on a double and home run and Logan Pierce picked up four hits in 10 at-bats.
Pierce leads the Trojans batting at a .387 clip with 15 doubles and five home runs. Danny Collins and Boone Shear are tied for the Troy lead with eight home runs each, while Collins has 15 doubles and Shear has driven in a team-leading 43 runs.
Junior right-hander Cass Abercrombie (1-2, 4.80) is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season on the mound for the Trojans against the Bulldogs. He has not allowed a run in his last four outings and in seven of his 10 outs on the season.
Samford (29-16) enters the mid-week game coming off a three-game Southern Conference sweep at Davidson. The Bulldogs are led at the plate by Saxon Butler who is batting .356 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. Brandon Miller leads Samford and is among the national leaders in home runs with 17. Freshman right-hander Andres Gracia (1-0, 3.77) is slated as the starting pitcher for Samford.
Troy won the first meeting between the two clubs this season 13-6 back on Feb. 28 in Troy. Collins was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Shear was 3-for-4 with six RBIs in the first contest to lead the Trojans. Troy picked up two runs on three hits in one inning against Gracia.
