MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – After carding a team score of 317 in Monday's first round of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship, the Troy men's golf team improved by 23 strokes in Tuesday's second round to improve its standing to sixth place.
The Trojans were led by freshman Tolver Dozier, who improved by six strokes in Tuesday's round. Dozier opened play on the 10th hole with a bogey on a par-four. Birdies on holes 12 and 17 allowed for Dozier to make the turn at one-under par. Dozier carded bogeys on the second and fifth holes, but a bogey on the sixth sent Dozier back to two-under to finish the day with a 70, tied for fifth.
After shooting a six-over par in yesterday's opening round, Jake Tucker rebounded in Tuesday's round with a one-under par performance. The first nine holes for Tucker were fairly consistent, with birdies on the 10th and 18th. Four bogeys and three birdies made for a finish at one-under, tied for 16th heading into Wednesday's final round.
Senior Ricky Casko, who struggled in Monday's opening round with an eight-over par performance, improved by three strokes on Tuesday. Casko shot an even-par on eight straight holes to open the day, and bogeyed the 18th to make the turn at one-over. Casko birdied the first to bring his score back to even-par, but a string of five straight bogeys on holes two through six sent Casko to five-over par to finish tied for 34th with a 77.
Although the four-over par 76 may not look impressive, sophomore Kyle Thommesen had one of the best days of all the Trojans in comparison to Monday's round. Thommesen bogeyed the first two holes he came across, but eagles on the 12th and 17th quickly sent him to two-under. A string of four bogeys put Thommesen at two-over, and a double bogey on the final hole of the round made for a four-over par, 76 to finish the day tied for 42nd.
Wil Clowdus improved by three strokes in Tuesday's round with an 83 to finish the day in 53rd.
No. 29 North Texas carded a team score, six-under par, 282 to lead the field of 11 in Tuesday's round, and enter the final 18 with a seven-stroke advantage at four-over par.
North Texas' Ty Spinella held onto his lead and will enter tomorrow with a one- stroke advantage over Denver's Chun-Ji Kim.
