TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team will look to build off of Thursday's win over No.22 Florida State as they host Middle Tennessee this weekend in a three-game Sun Belt series. The Trojans and Blue Raiders will play a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Please note that Saturday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but first pitch has been moved up two hours due to the threat of rain in Troy on Saturday. Sunday's game is still scheduled to be played as usual.
The Trojans (28-16, 7-9) come into the series after defeating No.22 Florida State on Thursday at home, 4-3. Ashley Rainey, outside of one pitch that resulted in a three-run homer, was untouchable as she picked up the complete game win.
Rainey retired 11 straight Seminoles after giving up the second-inning home run, and the Troy offense responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning as Troy picked up its third win over a ranked team this season.
Troy has won five of its last games, thanks in large part to a rejuvenated offense that is hitting .314 over that span. In four of the previous five games, the Trojans had been shutout, but they are a far cry from that point as three Trojans are hitting over .400 in the last six games.
Also, the young Troy pitching staff has stepped up, posting a 2.10 team ERA over the six-game span, including a 0.88 mark by Jaycee Affeldt.
The Blue Raiders (13-27, 3-12) are coming off of a three-game series with FIU on Tuesday and Wednesday. Middle Tennessee was swept in Tuesday's doubleheader, but avoided the sweep thanks to Kristi Marquez's walkoff single in the eighth inning on Wednesday.
Middle Tennessee is led by Kayla Toney, whose .402 batting average is tops on the team and fifth best in the Sun Belt. The Blue Raiders struggle in the circle as their 4.29 team ERA is the worst in the league. The Blue Raiders pitching staff has issued more walks (116) than strikeouts (113) this season.
