JONESBORO, Ark. – At one point in the first round of the 16th Annual ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate, the Trojans sat in tenth place, but after a four-under par performance by Ricky Casko in the second round, Troy is now tied for fourth after the 36-hole day of play.
Ricky Casko (72-67-139), who has been near and in the top ten in the results all year, shot a first round one-over par 72, but the second round proved to be a different story. After bogeying holes one and two, Casko birdied holes five and eight to make the turn at even-par. The senior from Cartersville, Ga. then birdied holes 12, 13, 14 and 17 to improve to four-under par and climb his way to the top of the standings, tied for first.
“I don't plan on changing my strategy,” Casko said. “I am going to make more putts tomorrow for the final round and I am going to stay aggressive with my tee shots and approach shots.”
According to Casko, the winds factored into the player's mindset headed onto the course.
“The course is not that long, but it is very open and there were several holes where the wind was 20 mph plus and that changes how you approach the course,” Casko said.
The second round score of 67 sets a new season record for Casko, and the 36-hole total of 139 also breaks his previous record of 140 set at the Amelia Island Intercollegiate back in November.
Even with Casko's impressive play, there were other Trojans who had strong performances. Tolver Dozier (71-71-142) carded scores of 71 in both the first and second round to place him tied for eighth after day one.
Jake Tucker (73-77-150) shot a first round 73, but struggled with round two and carded a six-over par 77 to put him tied for 61st. Although he may be tied for 89th after the first two rounds, Kyle Thommesen (82-73-155) has many reasons to be proud of his improvements. The sophomore from Auburn finished the first round near last with an 11-over par performance. However, Thommesen found the right stroke in round two and improved by nine strokes to finish the second round at two-over to end the day at 13-over tied for 89th.
Phillip Brennan (79-79-158), who made his debut as part of the five-player team, carded a 79 in both the first and second round to finish the day at 16-over par, tied for 99th. Wil Clowdus, who is competing as an individual, shot a 74 and 71 to finish the day tied for 24th.
After a four-over par total, Austin Peay leads UALR and No. 87 Jacksonville State. No. 79 Vanderbilt, Meridian CC and Troy all sit tied for fourth. Two of Vanderbilt's players are tied for first with Casko in Charlie Ewing and Will Snipes.
The final round of the 16th Annual ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate will take place tomorrow morning. Fans can follow the action live at www.golfstat.com.
“I just tell the guys to play within yourself and be aggressive,” head coach Matt Terry said. “We are focusing on hitting fairways and greens, two putting and then forgetting it and moving on.”
