TROY, Ala. – Just three strokes separate the top-20 golfers as the Troy men's golf team completed round one tied for eighth with a 307 team score at the Wolfpack Spring Open.
Wil Clowdus sits tied for 16th after shooting just two-over par, three strokes behind the leaders. North Carolina State's James Chapman, Lamar's Luke Jerling and Loyola Maryland's Jay Mulieri are knotted up in first with a one-under par 71.
“We are proud of how Wil Clowdus played today,” head coach Matt Terry said. “He really stepped up today and that is encouraging to see for the team.”
Clowdus began play on the back nine and made the turn at two-over par before carding two bogeys and two birdies to finish the day at two-over. Tolver Dozier's day turned bad after just his third hole as he carded two straight double-bogeys. Dozier then carded two birdies and two bogeys to finish tied for 27th at four-over par.
Ricky Casko, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 golfer in the Sun Belt, also struggled with consistency as he was four-over after his first nine holes. A late birdie on hole seven made the difference in his results, finishing tied for 38th at five-over par.
Kyle Thommesen and Jake Tucker both shot an eight-over par to finish the first of two rounds tied for 64th.
"This course is not very different from the course we will be playing in Conference, so this is a good warm-up for the guys,” Terry said.
Tomorrow's final round is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Fans can follow all of the action live at www.golfstat.com.
“There was a point today in the round that we could have finished a lot better, but we didn't,” Terry said. “The guys are playing good, so we have to go out and finish strong.”
