NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Sun Belt Conference announced its Tennis Players of the Week on Wednesday with Troy's Karoline Grymel earning the honor on the women's side. Middle Tennessee's Ben Davis was named the Men's Player of the Week.
Grymel has helped lead the Trojans to six straight wins as they enter the last week of the regular season at 10-6 looking for a high seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships.
The junior Hamburg, Germany native helped Troy to a 2-0 record last week with wins over Arkansas State and Alabama State. Individually, Grymel was perfect on the week in singles play and in doubles play with partner Lyubov Dorofeeva. In fact, the Troy duo found themselves ranked No.89 in Tuesday's ITA Doubles Rankings. They were the only Sun Belt pair in the rankings.
Grymel started off the week with two thrilling wins in Troy's 4-3 of Arkansas State. Grymel and Dorofeeva first took care of Mariana Rong and Ioana Teu in doubles action, 9-7, and Grymel carried the momentum into singles play. Despite dropping the first set to Rong, Grymel bounced back and took the match, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, clinching the Trojans' sixth straight victory.
In Troy's shutout of Alabama State on Tuesday, Grymel did just that as well as she cruised through singles and doubles play without dropping a single game. Grymel and Dorofeeva won their doubles match, 8-0, before Grymel took her singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
Grymel and the Trojans return to the court on Wednesday as they travel to Samford for their final non-conference match. Troy will then host Middle Tennessee on Friday and North Texas on Sunday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
The Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships begin on Thursday, April 19, in Denton, Texas.
