TROY, Ala. – Troy wraps up its five-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against Monmouth at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Troy will honor the 1987 National Championship team prior to Saturday's game.
Troy (7-5) enters the weekend after splitting a pair of mid-week games against UAB and East Carolina. Following a loss on Tuesday to the Blazers, the Trojans bounced back with an 8-2 victory over ECU on Wednesday night. The Pirates entered the game sixth in the latest RPI rakings and had the second lowest ERA in the NCAA at 1.20.
All three games will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM and worldwide coverage on TroyTrojans.com or via the Tune-In Radio app on your smartphone by searching for WTBF-FM. Fans can also follow the action on TroyTrojans.com with live stats and live video coverage.
The Trojans, who have won 40 of their last 48 home games, have found their offensive stride over the past six games. Troy is averaging 10.5 runs and 11.3 hits over those six games and has scored at least seven runs in five of the six games.
Leading the offensive charge for the Trojans has been both a likely and unlikely candidate. Senior All-American Tyler Hannah his hit safely in six straight games and is batting .520 with four doubles during that stretch. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Vaughn, who was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday, is batting .555 with four doubles and five RBIs over the past five games after earning his first career start last weekend.
Senior right-hander Tyler Ray (2-0, 0.45) will get the start on the mound Friday night for the Trojans. Ray, who took a no-decision last week, leads the NCAA with 29 career victories and with a win in 14 straight decisions. Ray has allowed just one earned run in 20 innings this season and has struck out 15 while walking just three.
Monmouth (4-5) will counter with 6-foot-6 right-hander Pat Light (2-1, 4.05) on Friday. Light was rated as the 25th best collegiate prospect for the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by Baseball America.
Saturday will pit a pair of left-handers against each other. Sophomore Jimmy Hodgskin (1-1, 4.19) will look to build on back-to-back quality starts for the Trojans, while junior Dan Smith (1-2, 5.62) will toe the rubber for the Hawks. Hodgskin allowed a combined four earned runs over 15 innings at Southern Miss and Bethune-Cookman in his last two starts. Neither team has announced a Sunday starter.
The Trojan bullpen has been a key part to the success early in the season. The bullpen has a combined ERA of 2.96 over 51.2 innings this season and has struck out 58 while issuing just 14 walks.
Leading the charge in the pen is the three-headed monster of Thomas Austin, Nate Hill and Tyson Workman. The trio has combined for 20 appearances, 33 innings, 41 strikeouts, a 1.36 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.
