TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team will close its current eight-game homestand this weekend as FIU visits for a three-game Sun Belt series. The two sides will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday before playing a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Trojans (20-10, 2-5) enter the contest having gone 2-3 thus far in their longest homestand of the season. Troy opened with a 7-1 win over No.21 Auburn back on March 21, and followed that performance with a 9-4 win over No.8 Louisiana-Lafayette.
However, the Trojans lost the final two games of the series to the Ragin' Cajuns and dropped a 6-3 decision to South Alabama on Wednesday. The two wins over Top 25 competition did garner the Trojans votes in both of this week's Top 25 polls, and also helped them to a 28th ranking in the NCAA's first official RPI report on Monday.
FIU (15-14, 3-1) comes to Troy after taking two of three from North Texas at home last weekend. The Panthers are led by freshman pitcher Mariah Dawson who is second in the Sun Belt with a 2.00 ERA and leads the league with 112 strikeouts.
Perennial All-Sun Belt outfielder Ashley McClain leads the Panthers with a .415 batting average and is also their leader in home runs (4) and RBI (22).
Troy is led in the circle by true freshman and reigning Sun Belt Co-Pitcher of the Week, Ashley Rainey. Rainey picked up complete games wins over Auburn and Louisiana-Lafayette last week and leads a young pitching staff with 10 wins.
At the plate, Sarah Shields leads the Trojans with a .363 batting average, including a .429 clip over the current homestand. Hayden Gann has been seeing the ball well lately with three home runs in Troy's last four games.
