TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team will return to action Monday morning in Hot Springs, Ark. when they compete in the UALR Women's Golf Classic at the Diamante Country Club.
The Trojans are coming off a tenth place finish at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate on Mar. 18. Sofia Bjorkman heads into the tournament as the highest ranked Trojan in the Sun Belt Conference standings. Bjorkman currently sits in seventh with an average score of 76.16. Denver currently leads the Sun Belt with a 73.68 individual stroke average, despite no tournament victories to this point.
“The girls are relaxed and are ready to go and they all like the course,” said head coach Matt Terry. “The weather is warmer and
dryer than it has been in the past; normally it is a wet a course, so it was great to see some dry conditions for the tournament.”
Oral Roberts claimed last year's team championship after Arkansas-Little Rock captured the title three times in five years. The Golden Eagles carded a team score of 903 to win last year's event by two strokes over Missouri State.
While in Hot Springs, the Trojans will be staying in host-housing, which is where families host team members in their own homes. Troy's Haley Lawrence and Sofia Bjorkman say they are excited for the arrangements while in Arkansas.
“It is a good feeling within the team because of the host housing,” Bjorkman said. “Haley and I have built a relationship with the host family so it is nice to come back and be welcomed.”
The tournament field will consist of 19 teams, including six Sun Belt teams. Half a dozen of the teams are ranked in the top-100 by GolfStat.com. Those teams include Tulsa (31st), North Texas (69th), Eastern Michigan (73rd), Missouri State (84th), Middle Tennessee (86th) and Samford (95th). The remaining teams include host UALR, Arkansas State, Ball State, Central Arkansas, ULM, UMKC, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, UTEP and Wichita State.
The tournament format will be 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow @TroyTrojansGolf on Twitter to stay informed on the latest updates. Be sure to visit www.TroyTrojans.com for a recap of each day's competition.
