TROY, Ala. – Louisiana-Lafayette scored eight of its nine runs in the last three innings, to defeat Troy, 9-1 in five innings at the Troy Softball Complex, Sunday afternoon.
Katie Smith, Nerissa Myers, and Christi Orgeron did most of the damages for ULL (30-1, 5-1) at the top of the order. The trio combined for a 5-for-9 day at the plate with both, Myers and Orgeron belting home runs.
Troy (20-9, 2-4) starter Ashley Rainey kept the Cajuns' sticks under control for the first four innings, allowing four runs, all off the homers by Myers and Orgeron.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hayden Gann hit her second home run against ULL in the three games, as the senior belted a solo shot to left center to cut the ULL lead down to 4-1. Gann's home run tied her for the team-lead in home runs with four, and the solo shot was the 21st career long ball for the Hoover, Ala. native.
Troy had its biggest run scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on base. Troy second baseman Sarah Shields rattled a double off the right center field fence and designated player Jaycee Affeldt reached on walk to give the Trojans runners at the corners with two outs.
ULL starter Jordan Wallace shut the door on the Trojans, as the freshman got Ashley Rainey to foul out to catcher Sarah Draheim to end the inning.
The Cajuns capitalized and picked up five runs in the top of the fifth, with two runs scoring on an RBI single to right field by Brianna Cherry.
Wallace (16-0) keeps her record perfect, picking up her second in-a-row, as the freshman allowed one run on five hits, while striking out four in five innings of work.
Ashley Rainey (10-4) picked up the loss for Troy, as the freshman allowed eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The homestand continues for the Trojans, as Troy hosts in-state rival South Alabama, Wednesday night, at the Troy Softball Complex with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
