Troy Tennis Splits with Jacksonville State
3/21/2012 11:00:00 PM | Tennis (M)
TROY, Ala. – The Troy tennis teams split a doubleheader with in-state foe Jacksonville State on Wednesday as the Troy women defeated the Gamecocks, 5-2, but the men fell, 4-3.
The Troy women (7-6) have now won seven of their last nine matches, but it wasn't easy as they struggled through a couple of singles matches.
“The girls played well enough to win,” said head coach Eric Hayes. “But to compete for a championship you must have six mentally tough girls and today we did not have that.”
The Troy men (3-12) fell behind by losing the doubles point, but fought back to take three singles matches and make it a close match. The Trojans had chances to win but couldn't convert.
“The guys played poorly in doubles but still found a way to win three singles matches,” Hayes said. “We were serving for the match at number six but couldn't convert. Today was a result of one team playing with confidence and one without.”
The Troy women return to the court on Sunday when they host UAB at home at 12:00 p.m. The Troy men were schedule to play Wichita State and South Alabama in Mobile, but those matches have been moved.
The Trojans match with Wichita State has been canceled while the match against South Alabama has moved to April 5.

MEN – Jacksonville State 4, Troy 3
Despite Patrick Eichler and Anas Rouchdi winning at number three doubles very easily, 8-0, the Trojans couldn't capture the doubles point as JSU got wins at number one and two and Troy found itself in an early hole.
Eichler knotted things up at 1-1 with his win at number five singles, 6-1, 6-3, and a Jamie Eccleton win at number four tied things at 2-2 after JSU won at number three.
The Gamecocks took a 3-2 lead with a win at number two, but troy looked poised to tie things up again as Tadju Davies served for the match at number six.
In the third set, Davies was up 5-3 and serving for the match, but JSU's Felipe Wenzel fought back and took the match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The win clinched the match for the Gamecocks and proved costly for Troy as Rouchdi won in three sets at number one, meaning the Trojans would've taken the match, 4-3, with a win at number six.
