Trojans Locked in Tight Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy men's tennis team was locked into a tight match at Southern Miss on Friday afternoon when the rain began falling, forcing the postponement of the match.

The Trojans (1-5) and Golden Eagles (5-4) will now resume their match on Sunday morning per an ITA rule that mandates postponed matches be finished within 48 hours of the stoppage.

Troy is scheduled to take on Lamar in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday afternoon and that match will still be played as planned.

As for Troy's postponed match with Southern Miss, the two sides had been on the court for five hours when the rain began to fall, and there were only three completed points to show for it.

The Trojans dropped the doubles point due to losses at number two and three spots in the lineup and, therefore, the first doubles match was not completed as Troy's Sami Ghorbel and Mansingh Athare found themselves in a 6-6 match.

In singles action, Southern Miss got a win at number six over Troy's Andres Sanchez, 6-0, 6-1 to build a 2-0 lead. Sanchez saw his first action of the season due to the absence of Jamie Eccleton.

Athare got the point back with a win at the number three spot, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, but that was the extent of the straight matches as the remaining four were all in a third set when the rain began to fall.

Tadju Davies is the only Trojan currently leading in the third set as he holds a 4-3 advantage over USM in the deciding set. However, the third sets involving Troy's Ghorbel and Patrick Eichler have yet to begin.

Anas Rouchdi is trailing in his third set at the number one spot, 4-3.

Troy will need victories in three of the remaining four matches to capture the team win over Southern Miss.
