GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Troy men's golf team carded an opening-round score of 286 today to lead the 21-team field at the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club.
The University of Georgia's Sepp Straka (66), who is playing as an individual, carded a six-under par 66 to take the lead after day one of the tournament. Senior Ricky Casko sits tied for seventh (70) after carding a two-under par 70. Casko birded holes two and five to break out to an early two-under par. The sixth hole was a highlight for many golfers today as 10 eagles were recorded on the par-five 483-yard hole. Casko was one of those golfers and entered the seventh hole at four-under par. After alternating between birdies and bogeys on the back nine, Casko ended his day at two-under par.
“I didn't make many mistakes today,” said Casko. “I hit all my putts on the exact line I saw. A few more putts could have fallen but I putted well.”
Jake Tucker (71) finished only one stroke behind Casko, tied for 11th. Tucker was consistent at shooting even-par throughout the day and only recorded two bogeys. Tucker entered the final hole at even-par after bogeying holes 10 and 13, but rebounded and carded a birdie to end his day at one-under par.
Tolver Dozier (72) began his day with two birdies and also eagled hole six like teammate Casko, but struggled with the back nine. Dozier bogeyed holes 11, 12, 15 and 16, but thanks to early, consistent play on the front nine, he salvaged a first round even-par to finish day one tied for 23rd.
Wil Clowdus (73) finished the day tied for 30th at one-over par, while teammate Kyle Thommesen (74) carded a first round two-over par tied for 42nd. Phillip Brennan also competed and finished tied for 100th, but will not be counted in the team's statistics.
“The guys have worked hard and it is nice to see this,” Coach Terry said. “They desire to see these results.”
Round two of the 54-hole tournament will begin Saturday morning. Troy's Kyle Thommesen will be the first Trojan to tee-off with a scheduled start time of 8 a.m.
“The other teams are going to make their charge tomorrow,” Terry said. “We still have two more rounds and we need to continue our run too.”
