TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After ending the first round in 11th place at the Seminole Intercollegiate yesterday, the Troy men's golf team improved their standing to ninth place after a solid second-round performance today.
The Trojans' two-round total of 581 (292-289) has them 29 strokes behind leader No. 8 Georgia Tech who is 16-under par (278-274-552) after the second of three rounds on the 7,050-yard, par-71 course.
Jake Tucker still sits at the top of the leader board of all the Trojans with a two-round score of 141 (70-71). He started the day tied for 13th and has improved one spot, tied for 12th. Tucker began play on the back nine and birdied two holes, but then had late trouble and carded two bogeys to end the round. Tucker will enter tomorrow's final round as the only Trojan at under-par.
Tolver Dozier also climbed his way up the leader board, tied for 21st. Dozier shot a one-over par in yesterday's round, but bounced back today with an even-par 71 (72-71-143). He began the round carding three bogeys on the back nine, but then recorded a birdie at hole-18 to make the turn into his final nine holes. He then carded birdies on holes five, seven and eight, but did commit a birdie on hole nine. Head Coach Matt Terry said he was proud of his team's efforts, but he added that they needed to finish off their final holes more effectively.
“We did make some mistakes toward the end of the round,” said Terry. “Our last two holes we played at five-over par and we finished at five-over par as a team.”
Ricky Casko, the only senior on this weekend's five-member team, also climbed his way up through the standings. Casko entered today's round tied for 52nd, but improved to a tie for 41st after he shot a one-over par. He began his day on the back nine by carding two birdies, but then struggled with his last three holes on the back nine and bogeyed on three straight to make the turn at one-over par. The Cartersville, Ga. native ended his day with a one-over par 72 (74-72-146) entering tomorrow's round.
Kyle Thommesen held on to his spot in the leader board, tied for 72nd after shooting a second-round 75 (76-75-151), while Wil Clowdus improved to 87th after his second-round score of 76 (81-76-157).
Heading into tomorrow's final round, the Trojans will look to move their way up the standings with conference opponent Arkansas State one spot ahead of them in eighth.
“I saw some really positive things out there today,” said Terry. “I think tomorrow with it being the final round; we have the chance to end this tournament on a really good note.”
