TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team will take on three teams at the Red and Blue Classic hosted by the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi.
Troy enters the tournament off to an 11-2 start, the best in program history, and will face Belmont, Chattanooga, and host Ole Miss at this weekend's tournament.
Junior catcher Hannah Renn, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, leads the Trojans into the Red and Blue Classic, after going 9-for-16 with a home run, a triple, and four RBIs last weekend at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Renn leads Troy with four home runs and her five doubles are tied with senior Hayden Gann for the best among the team.
The Trojans will continue to rely on freshmen pitchers Jaycee Affeldt and Ashley Rainey, as the duo has combined to earn seven of Troy's 11 wins this season. Affeldt leads the team in victories (4) and strikeouts (32), while Rainey has picked up three wins this season and has only allowed eight walks in 36 innings pitched. Junior Michaela Hamilton leads the team with a 1.24 ERA, while freshman Sarah Thomas' two saves lead the Sun Belt.
Troy places twice on Friday, facing Belmont (1-11) at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 4:45 p.m. matchup with host Ole Miss (5-4). The
Trojans are 17-3 all-time against Belmont. Both teams were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1999-2005. Troy will face Ole Miss for the first time.
On Saturday, the Trojans will take on Chattanooga (8-5), Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. After the round robin play as finished. Troy is 2-1 all-time against the Mocs, with the last meeting between the teams coming in 2009 at the Gamecock Invitational when Troy defeated Chattanooga, 8-5.
After round-robin play, each team will be seeded by record, with the fourth-seed facing the first seed at 2:30 p.m., while the second and third seed will play at 4:45 p.m.
Sunday will be the consolation and championship finals as the winners of Saturday afternoon's game will face off in the tournament championship game at 12:15 p.m., while the losers will play in the consolation game at 10:00 a.m.
