TROY, Ala. – The Troy baseball team returns home to Riddle-Pace Field Tuesday night to play host to in-state foe Samford in the Trojans first mid-week contest of the season. First pitch between the Trojans and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
Troy (3-3) comes into the mid-week tilt following a tough three-game series at No. 28 Southern Miss over the weekend. The Trojans took the opener 3-0 behind a pair of RBIs from Tyler Hannah and a combined shutout on the mound by Tyler Ray and Nate Hill. The Golden Eagles rallied back to claim the series with victories on Saturday and Sunday.
Samford (6-2) has claimed series victories over Radford and South Alabama in addition to a pair of mid-week wins over Alabama A&M and Jacksonville State to open the season.
Junior right-hander Chris Fisher (0-0, 11.25) is slated to make his first career start on the mound for the Trojans. Fisher pitched four innings out of the bullpen against Central Michigan during the opening weekend of play. The Bulldogs will counter with freshman right-hander Cole Limbaugh (1-0, 3.00) who lasted three innings in a start against Alabama A&M last Tuesday.
Freshman center fielder Clay Holcomb led the Trojans at the dish last weekend with four hits in 10 at-bats and is batting .308 on the season. Danny Collins leads Troy on the year with a .360 batting average while Logan Pierce is batting .333. Hannah has drawn eight walks in the first six games and leads the team with a .536 on-base percentage.
The Trojans are averaging over a strikeout per inning as a pitching staff and have a 3.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio compared to a 1.4 ratio by their opponents.
Samford is led by Saxon Butler's .567 batting average and Brandon Miller's six home runs and 15 RBIs. The Bulldogs are batting .318 as a team and have hit 16 doubles and 14 home runs in their eight games.
Troy leads the all-time series 35-16 and the Trojans have won 21 of the 25 all-time meetings at Riddle-Pace Field, including a 14-1 victory last season. Troy has won five of the last seven meetings in the series.
The game will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM and worldwide coverage on TroyTrojans.com. Fans will also be able to follow the action with live stats and live video on TroyTrojans.com.
