BOX SCORE
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 28 Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead en route to an 8-1 victory over Troy in the rubber game of the three-game non-conference series Sunday at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (4-3) scored all the runs they would need on just one hit in the first inning. Kameron Brunty reached on one of three walks in the opening frame and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. After another walk reloaded the bases, Blake Brown was hit by a pitch to push the second run of the inning across the plate.
The Trojans (3-3) had an opportunity to tie the game in the second inning after Logan Pierce and Clay Holcomb opened the frame with a walk and single. Josh McDorman moved the pair up a base with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, but USM starter Boomer Scarborough retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Misfortune turned into four more Southern Mississippi runs in the third inning. Jared Bales was the beneficiary of some miscommunication between the Troy defense and reached on a one-out infield single. A throwing error allowed the next batter to reach and put runners at second and third for Mason Robbins who cashed in on the miscues with a two-run single back up the middle. Following a single, Travis Creel snuck a double inside the left-field line to plate two more runs and stretch the lead out to 6-0.
Holcomb put the Trojans on the board in the sixth when he scored from second base after Creel was charged with a fielding error and throwing error at third base on the same play. The Golden Eagles capped the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Scarborough (1-0) picked up the win for the Golden Eagles after allowing two hits and no runs over five innings of work. He struggled with his control as he issued five walks and struck out two.
Purdy (0-2), who was one of six pitchers used by Troy, was charged with the loss. He allowed two runs on one hit in an inning of work; he walked three and hit two batters.
The Trojans welcome Samford to Riddle-Pace Field on Tuesday night for their first mid-week game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
