TROY, Ala. – The road to Omaha for the Troy baseball team begins Friday night when the Trojans open a four-game series against Central Michigan at Riddle-Pace Field.
First pitch for the 2012 season opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and concludes with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
All four games will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch each day. The games will be broadcast locally on 94.7 FM and worldwide on TroyTrojans.com.
The Trojans will send senior All-American Tyler Ray to the bump in the series opener. The Hoover, Ala., native enters the season as the NCAA's active leader with 27 wins and has the nation's longest active win streak at 12 games. Ray, the Sun Belt Preseason Pitcher of the Year, is 17-3 at Riddle-Pace Field in his career.
Sophomore southpaw Jimmy Hodgskin will get the call in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday for the Trojans after posting a 3-7 record with a 4.68 ERA last season. Junior right-hander Adam Purdy will make his Troy debut in the nightcap of the doubleheader, while junior right-hander Chris Fisher is scheduled to make his first start in a Trojan uniform in the series finale on Sunday.
The defending Sun Belt Conference champions were picked to repeat as the league's best in the preseason coaches' poll, while several national publications have the Trojans returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and fourth time since joining the Sun Belt; Troy's three NCAA appearances are the most by any Sun Belt school since the Trojans joined the league in 2006.
All-America shortstop Tyler Hannah leads the Trojan offensive attack after batting .370 with 27 doubles, seven home runs and a .477 on-base percentage last season. Troy hit .292 as a unit last season and finished second in the NCAA with 149 doubles.
Central Michigan was picked to win its third straight MAC West Division title after coming off a 31-27 season in 2011.
Zach Cooper, who went 6-3 with a 3.29 ERA last season, will start opposite Ray in the season opener. The senior right-hander was selected in the 46th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft last June but elected to return to school. The remainder of CMU's pitching rotation is expected to be senior southpaw Ryan Longstreth (1-5, 5.01), senior right-hander Jon Weaver (2-1, 5.18) and junior left-hander Rick Dodridge (3-3, 6.20 – 2010).
Season tickets for Troy's 29 home games can still be purchased by contacting the ticket office at 1-877-878-WINS or in person at Tine Davis Fieldhouse.
