Rainey Grabs Pitcher of the Week Honor

NEW ORLEANS, La. – After helping lead the Trojans to a Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic title and a perfect 5-0 start, true freshman Ashley Rainey has been named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week.
The Tuscaloosa native made quite an impression in her collegiate debut as she threw 16.2 shutout innings over three appearances to help Troy claim the title at the 10-team tournament.
Rainey struck out 15 on the weekend and gave up just one extra base hit as she picked up two wins.
In her first collegiate start, Rainey posted a four-hit shutout of Jackson State with eight strikeouts to pick up her first win. The next day she posted a three-hit shutout of Nicholls State for her second win.
On Sunday, Rainey pitched the final 2.2 innings of a win against Akron as she struck out five of the 12 batters she faced to clinch the tournament title for Troy.
Rainey was also 2-for-8 at the plate on the weekend with a home run and five RBI.
“She (Rainey) is such a student of the game, such a perfectionist, and she is always trying to get better,” said head coach Melanie Davis.
The Trojans will next put their perfect record on the line this weekend as they host the Quality Inn Classic at the Trojan Softball Complex. Six teams, including Troy will participate in the tournament which begins on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.
