BIRMINGHAM – The Troy track & field team finished day two at the Vulcan Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex on a high note leading up to the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships.
“Overall the team made strong moves,” coach Jill Lancaster said. “I feel we can feed off of this final meet to make more improvements between now and the conference.”
Brynn Forsythe set a personal best in the weight throw placing in a tie for fourth with a distance of 16.83 meters.
In the triple jump, Breanna Sanner and Veronica Bryant both set personal bests. Sanner placed 11th with a distance of 11.62 meters and moved to fifth all-time. Bryant placed 17th with a distance of 11.45 meters.
Pole vaulter Hayley Watts attempted a school record and just slightly missed with a distance of 3.10 meters. Nura Hussein set a personal best in the pole vault with a distance of 2.95 meters.
Mychea Williams placed ninth in the 60-meters finals duplicating her personal best with a time of 7.73 seconds.
Ja-Courtney Alexander placed 12th out of 56 in the 200-meters with a time of 25.39 seconds after averting an injury in the 400-meters. Adria Hill set a personal best in the 200-meters with a time of 25.80 seconds placing 23rd out of 56.
“Alexander avoided the disaster after being stepped on during the 400-meters and came back to run in the 200-meters,” Lancaster said.
Troy had two teams ending the day in the 4x400 relay. Team 'A', composed of Ariel Cavasos, Ja-Courtney Alexander, Candice Vaughn, Luv Dean, and Alexus Cobbs placed 12th with a time of 3:59.71. Team 'B', composed of Ashley Hall, Veronica Bryant, Garyn Henderson, Adria Hill, Tiffany Slater, and April Irving placed 15th with a time of 4:04.90
“I am proud of our achievements to this point,” said coach Lancaster, “but we definitely need to continue on this path of improvement into the conference championship.”
The Trojans have two weeks to prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on February 25 and 26.
“Many athletes have the opportunity to make adjustments that are not physical in preparation for the championship,” said Lancaster.
