TROY, Ala. – Despite a career-high 17 points by Ray Chambers, the Trojans (4-6) fell to Utah Valley (5-6), 86-82 in double overtime at Trojan Arena on Saturday night. All five Trojans scored in double figures.
“It came down to not executing in the last 15 seconds of regulation,” said head coach Don Maestri. “We're just not talented enough where we can bank on two or three guys.”
Troy led by two with just 3.7 seconds to play, but an air-balled 3-pointer by Holton Hunsaker fell to Alfonzo Hubbard who tipped it in to tie the score. After a 7-7 first overtime, the Trojans were outscored 13-9 in the second overtime.
Troy hit a tough stretch to start the second half, falling behind by as many as seven points. Emil Jones took a while to get going, but scored seven straight points for the Trojans over a two minutes span in the second half to help put Troy back on top.
“One of the things we did well tonight was that we had a lot of energy,” Maestri said. “I thought (Tevin) Calhoun and (Westley) Hinton played well.”
Tevin Calhoun came off the bench to score 11 points and nine rebounds, while Westley Hinton had four points and five rebounds, mostly in the extra frames.
Chambers had a career night, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and scoring 17 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Hunter Williams scored 13 points, while Jones finished with 10, all in the second half.
Troy shot 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field and 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. Troy out-rebounded Utah Valley 48-46.
The Trojans took a 34-28 lead into the break, sparked by nine points by Jethroe, on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Chambers had an impressive first half, as he also scored nine points and grabbed six boards.
The Trojans returns to the hardwood on Thursday, when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face Alabama State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
