MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A late run came up short, while a cold start to the second half proved to be the downfall for Troy, as the Trojans (4-7, 0-2 Sun Belt) fell at Alabama State (1-7, 0-0 SWAC), 74-68, on Thursday night at the Acadome in Montgomery, Ala. Tevin Calhoun led the Trojans with 13 points.
“Hats off to them, they obviously did not want to lose two times to Troy in the same year,” said head coach Don Maestri. “This had more to do with us tonight than it did Alabama State. The one area we have to get stronger in is being tough.”
Troy scored just six points in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Hornets ballooned their lead from six at the half to as many as 20 in the second. The Hornets shot well from range on the game, hitting 10-of-17 from 3-point land.
The Trojans struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 9-of-31. Troy finished the game at 35 percent from the field (21-of-60), while Alabama State hit 52 percent (28-of-54).
Troy cut the lead to single digits late in the game, but eventually ran out of time, falling by six. Emil Jones scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while Deonata Jethroe had 11 points and four boards.
Troy trailed 42-36 at the break, with Calhoun leading the way with 10 points. The Hornets were on fire in the opening half, hitting 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Troy kept the game close by hitting 9-of-13 free throws in the first half.
The Trojans are back in action on Saturday, when they host Georgia State at 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
