Trojans Hold Annual Intrasquad Meet

TROY, Ala.- The Troy track and field program closed out its fall training last Wednesday afternoon with the annual Cardinal, Black and Gray Intrasquad Competition.
“We had one of the best days ever for our end of the year Fall Cardinal, Gray, Black Intrasquad meet,” Troy head coach Jill Lancaster said. “The one thing we do not coach is the desire to win. It comes from within. This team has that desire which is a good sign.”
The fall training season is long for those not in season. The coaching staff likes the intrasquad scrimmage as it helps them to see the competitive nature of their team, while putting the newcomers in against the veterans of the team. The competition gives them motivation as they break for the holidays. The cross country athletes had the opportunity to join their track and field teammates for the first time as well.
“The meet was very competitive and showed the depth we have in certain areas this season as well as some pleasant surprises,” Lancaster said. “We look forward to the competition that lies ahead of us in preparation for the championship season.”
“There were no surprises as the seniors took a lot of pride in the competition and pushed the limit,” Lancaster said. “Seniors in the sprints, hurdles and jumps led the way by winning their events. Ja-Courtney Alexander, Veronica Bryant, Christina Barrett and Jasmine Patton looked outstanding for where we are in our training. Nothing says get it done like your last year as a Troy Trojan.”
The men's side saw the NCAA regional qualifiers continue on an intense pace as seniors Neko Freeman, Mackenzie Howell, Nicolo' Bolla, Eddie Lynn and Larry Henry along with junior Thaddeus Curtis wasted no time in establishing themselves as leaders by winning their respective events.
The newcomers began to sort things out and see where they stacked up. Freshmen jumpers Myles Charley and Brandon Farish are on the heels of the top returners. It should be a very interesting season.
“The distance group surprised me with the amount of leg speed that they have maintained despite coming off a high volume cross country season and a two week training break,” assistant coach Jeff Jenkins said. “Freshman Julia Ostendorf and junior Kemper Morton put down a few marks that I was especially surprised with.”
“I can't begin to say how pleased I was with the intrasquad meet with the group of throwers,” said assistant coach Shawn Williams said. “We are starting where we left off last year at conference. It was great to see the results of all the hard work from the fall already showing up this early. The team competed hard which is always the most important part of this time of the year. I am very excited to see what this team is capable of this spring.”
