TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Troy women's cross country team competed in the FSU Invitational Friday night in Tallahasse, Fla., placing 13th out of 17 teams in the 6k race.
"I saw what I needed to see today,” said head coach Jeff Jenkins. “On the women's side, they moved the distance to 6k this year, but the ladies responded well. Compared to last year, the same girls that ran the same course, but 1,000 meters shorter, averaged a faster pace per mile. Morgan ran six seconds per mile faster in a race 20 percent longer than last year. Julia led the women's team for the fourth straight time this season and just barely missed the awards podium for top twenty. On a day and a course that was less favorable than Julia's previous personal best, she ran a four second personal best today. "
Freshman Julia Ostendorf continued to lead the Trojans finishing 28th with a time of 23:23.2. Senior Morgan Paulson proved to be a force for Troy as well, recording a time of 23:28.1 qualifying her for 32nd place.
“Morgan cut off a nice little piece from her previous best 6k by running a nine second personal record today,” Jenkins said. “The thing to remember is that Morgan's personal best from last season is about a minute slower than what she ran today. She has really responded well to the training and knows how to really get the benefit from the workouts. Morgan and Julia both finished ahead of a young lady who has run 17:06 for 5k. I think they're realizing that they can hang with the top group.”
Junior Haley Davies rounded out the top 100 for the Trojans, placing 100th with a time of 25:48.2. Sophomores Kendall Harris and Robin Blackman recorded times of 26:15.8 and 26:25.6 finishing 114th and 117th respectively. Sophomore Anna Claire Scarlett finished 149th for the Trojans with freshman Jackie Smith coming in 181st.
The Trojans next meet will be at home when they host the annual Coach O Invitational on October 13, beginning at 10 am. Admission is free and coaches encourage everyone to attend.
