Troy, Ala.- After taking a three week break, the Troy men's and women's cross country teams are back in action as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the FSU Invitational on Friday night. The women's 6K race, which features 22 teams, will begin at 6:15 p.m. The men's 8K race will begin at 6:45 p.m. and will feature 20 teams.
“For the past three weeks, the team has been focusing purely on training without the reward of getting to see the effect in races,” Troy coach Jeff Jenkins said. “I believe I speak for the team when I say that the workouts these past twenty days have been some of the most challenging workouts they have ever finished.
“Both teams know that we are just over three weeks out from the Sun Belt race and their eyes are focused on that race. However, we have prepared to run well this weekend rather than completely training through the race. We aren't quite ready to peak, but I believe we will see some big performances on Friday evening in Tallahassee.”
The Troy men's team finished third overall in their last race, the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala. The men are going into this weekend led by junior Enock Kirui who recorded a time of 25:59, finishing sixth of 120 runners in Mobile. Junior Kemper Morton finished 12th setting a personal best on an 8K course with a time of 26:23.50.
Freshman Julia Ostendorf continues to be a force for the Troy Women's team, who finished eighth overall in a field of 17 teams at the Azalea City Classic. Ostendorf finished with a time of 23:27.19 placing her 15th out of 115 runners. Senior Morgan Paulson continued to improve on the season finishing the meet with a time of 23:37.21 placing 18th.
“We know that there will be some good competition,” said Jenkins. “At this point, both teams know what it is going to take for them to reach goals that they have set. I hope to see some purposeful running this weekend.”
