BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Troy men's and women's cross country teams both competed at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, with each squad finishing 10th, while some individuals shined.
The successful weekend started before the Trojans even stepped on the course as nine of Troy's 10 eligible student-athletes earned academic awards on Friday night.
On Saturday morning at Kereiakes Park, Enock Kirui shined for the Troy men's team, finishing 15th with a 25:58.7 on the 8k course, a season best time. The top 15 finish earned Kirui All-Sun Belt honors.
“Enock ran a very aggressive race today,” Troy coach Jeff Jenkins said. “He put himself in position to do well and just got out kicked by four or five guys in the last 50 meters.”
Kemper Morton ran nearly 1:20 faster than he did on the same course in 2011, recording a time of 26:11.9 to finish 24th.
On the women's side, Julia Ostendorf narrowly missed All-Sun Belt honors, finishing 17th with a time of 18:52.8 on the 5K course. The time bested Ostendorf's personal record by a full minute.
“We were all biting our nails as she teetered between 13th and 17th,” Jenkins said. “We were hoping that she would make all-conference.”
Morgan Paulson's time of 19:09.8 put her in 24th, joining Ostendorf in the top 30. Paulson ran almost 40 seconds faster than her Sun Belt Championships race in 2011.
“These kinds of increases in performance don't occur by accident,” Jenkins said. “This is what we have been training to run all season. The credit goes completely to the athletes for doing exactly what they have been asked to do and for trusting in the training.
“When these students buy into our philosophy, then our job is done as coaches. With that being said, the team and I are far from satisfied. There is a hunger that we all possess that will undoubtedly lead to more and more success as time goes on.”
UALR won the Sun Belt men's title while Georgia State won the women's title.
