Both the men and women of the Troy University Track & Field and Cross Country teams have not only excelled in their sport, but also in the classroom.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association announced the Troy Women's team as a 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team.
"It's great to find out that your team worked hard on and off the track," Allison Paulson, women's cross country and track and field team member from Mobile, said.
Troy is one of 164 institutions earning the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.
"We have been striving to improve our academics over the past four or five years," coach Jill Lancaster said.
To'Neko Freeman, representing the men's team, earned a place on the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team.
"I am proud of myself being able to juggle academics and athletics," Freeman said. "I worked really hard last year."
A total of 420 student-athletes representing 153 institutions were chosen among this group.
"He (Freeman) has worked hard to make sure he doesn't miss any opportunities," Lancaster said.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards:
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
"Our students know the importance of performance in the classroom," Lancaster said. "We expect them to continue to do well."
This year the Trojans have set similar goals to accomplish in the classroom and on the track.
