Former TROY standout has been called up to the Golden State Boomers
AUSTRALIA (NBL.com) - Promising West Australian big man Tom Jervis has been called into the squad for the Golden Star Boomers this week after Perth Wildcats' big man Matt Knight strained his calf on Friday night.
Jervis has been a force in the WA State Basketball League in recent seasons for the East Perth Eagles and after training with the NBL club the Perth Wildcats for most of the 2010/11 season, he has continued some outstanding performances this year in the SBL.
The 213cm 24-year-old is among the most promising Australian big men and is craving for a chance to earn a roster spot with an NBL club, so spending this week with the Golden Star Boomers could be a tremendous opportunity for him to put his case forward.
However, with his inclusion is the disappointment of Perth Wildcats big man Knight straining his calf playing with the Willetton Tigers on Friday night and while it's a slight injury he will be out for about two weeks meaning he will miss the Boomers camp in Perth this week.
Knight was coming off a strong finish to his first season with the Perth Wildcats as the main focal point down low and was in good form in the SBL with the Willetton Tigers, but early on in Friday night's game he suffered a slight strain to the calf he tore during the 2010/11 NBL season.
It happened early in the game between Willetton and the Lakeside Lightning at the Lakeside Recreation Centre.
The timing is disappointing for Knight given he was set to be part of the Boomers camp in Perth this week ahead of the YouYi Games with China that features a game at Challenge Stadium next Friday and in Singapore on Sunday.
However, the injury is only set to keep him out of action for one week and the Perth Wildcats will take a cautious approach with it and likely have him sit out two weeks of action, but it is just a slight strain and is not expected to have any further ramifications.
The Golden Star Boomers squad is: Damian Martin, Luke Cooper, Ben Madgen, Clint Steindl, Daniel Dillon, Peter Crawford, David Barlow, Dante Exum, Daniel Kickert, Jesse Wagstaff, Luke Nevill, Anatoly Bose, Aron Baynes, Rhys Martin, Cameron Tragardh and Tom Jervis.
The head coach is Brett Brown and he will be assisted by Andrej Lemanis and Marty Clarke.
