For the third straight weekend, first-place Troy will host another team vying to knock them out of the top spot. This week the opponent is Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Trojans (32-12, 15-6) dropped out of most national rankings after a 1-3 week that included a series loss at Florida Atlantic last weekend. The squad was able to bounce back and knock off Jacksonville State on Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Men of Troy battled back from a five-run deficit in the early innings to take an 8-7 walk-off win thank to a pinch-hit double from Josh McDorman that plated Daniel Peterson.
Louisiana-Lafayette (26-19, 13-8) enters as the winner of three straight games and five of its last six contests. The Cajuns are in a three-way tie for second place in the Sun Belt with Florida Atlantic and FIU.
Troy trails the Cajuns 7-16 in the all-time series, including 3-4 in games played at Riddle-Pace Field and 5-15 since Bobby Pierce took the reins of the Troy program in 2003.
The Trojans will send Tyler Ray to mound on Friday night as he goes for his 11th win this season. The Hoover, Ala.-native leads the nation with his 10-0 mark and is tops in the Sun Belt with a 1.83 ERA. He will be opposed by RHP Taylor Hubbell (4-4, 3.62 ERA) for Louisiana.
Freshman Jimmy Hodgskin (2-4, 4.08 ERA) gets the nod on Saturday against UL's Jordan Nicholson (3-2, 2.63 ERA). The finale on Sunday will feature the first weekend start of the season for sophomore southpaw Shane McCain (1-2, 4.27 ERA), while LHP T.J. Geith (5-3, 4.30 ERA) takes the hill for the Cajuns.
Ray, along with short stop Adam Bryant, was named to the Midseason Watch List for the Golden Spikes on Tuesday as announced by USA Baseball. On Friday, Bryant was named as quarterfinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award – given annually to the nation's top shortstop.
Bryant leads the Trojans and Sun Belt with 20 doubles this year. He is also tops on the team with five home runs and 40 RBI. Infielder Jordan Poirrier leads UL with 15 doubles, six home runs and 45 runs driven in.
The Voice of the Trojans Barry McKnight and his partner Jerry Miller will bring you all the action from the diamond on WTBF 94.7-FM in Troy and Brundidge and online at WTBF.com.
First pitch on both Friday and Saturday night is set for 6 pm. Sunday's game will begin at 1 pm, but beginning at 12:30 pm, the Troy coaching staff and administration will honor seven seniors as well as a pair of former players that graduated recently in a ceremony on the field.
