LAFAYETTE, La. (TroyTrojans.com) – The fifth-seeded Troy University softball team begins its run at the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championships Wednesday afternoon against fourth-seeded FIU. The game is scheduled for 3 pm at Lamson Park, on the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
TROY (35-20, 11-12 Sun Belt) and FIU (35-20, 14-10 Sun Belt) have met three times this season, with the Golden Panthers winning two of three games in Miami. The Trojans were able to win the second game of the series in extra innings, while leading the all-time series 11-10 overall.
The Trojans are no stranger to postseason play in conference tournaments, as they won the Mid-Continent championship in 1996 and they have finished as runner-up in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament twice (2007,2010). The Trojans have posted a 10-8 record all-time in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, including winning three games in 2006, 2007 and 2010.
The game on Wednesday will be the second time the Trojans and FIU have met in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament; with FIU winning the only contest. The winner of the TROY-FIU contest will get the winner of the top-seeded (24/25) Louisiana and eighth-seeded Middle Tennessee game on Thursday at 5:30 pm; while the loser will play the loser of the contest at 12:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon.
TROY is led this season on the mound by Second Team All-Sun Belt pick, Ashlyn Williams (17-13). The senior has thrown 22 complete games and is 18th overall in the NCAA Division I-A record book with 1,279 strikeouts. She has posted a 9-2 record in her last 11 starts, with her two losses coming against Alabama and Middle Tennessee.
Meanwhile, at the plate, the Trojans are led by Second Team All-Sun Belt pick Hayden Gann with seven home runs and 30 RBI; while Nikki Hollett is the team-leader in batting average, home runs, extra base hits, RBI and slugging percentage. The junior is second in the country among shortstops in home runs with 19 entering the tournament.
The tournament starts at 10 am on Wednesday at Lamson Park, with the Trojans and FIU playing the third game of the day. Live stats and live video will be provided throughout the tournament.
