Trojans Pull Championships at USA Invitational

TROY competed in the state of Alabama for the third consecutive week

MOBILE, Ala. (TroyTrojans.com) – The Troy University track and field program walked away with three championships and multiple personal bests at the USA Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Morgan Paulson won her first race of the season, near her hometown, as she crossed the line first in the 5000-meters with a time of 19:31.38. The time is the third fastest at the school this season, and is a season-best for the sophomore. She was joined in the race by her sister, Allison Paulson, finishing with the fourth fastest time at the school this year as she crossed the line in a time of 19:56.10.
In the same race, Haley Davies finished with the fastest time of the season as she crossed the line in a time of 20:30.10.
Although the Trojans won just one individual race on the day, they finished first in the 4x100-meter relay as the team of Adria Hill, Tamara Curtis, Ashley Hall and Amiracle Watson crossed the line in a time of 47.69 seconds. The Trojans also finished just off the medal stand in the 4x400-meter relay, as they finished fourth overall.
Not to be outdone, Larry Henry claimed an individual championship on the men's side in the high jump as he cleared a height of 2.03 meters. The jump is the second highest this season, only 0.03 meters behind his best jump of the year set two weeks ago at Florida State.
In the 100-meters on the women's side, Amiracle Watson ran the sixth-fastest time at the school this season, recording a personal best in the meantime, as she crossed the line in a time of 12.24 seconds; followed closely by teammate Ashley Hall, who was clocked at the same time Saturday.
Adria Hill finished fourth overall in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking the sixth fastest time at the school this season and recording a personal best in the event, crossing the line in a time of 15.32 seconds. She was followed closely across the line by Veronica Bryant in a personal best time of 15.43 seconds.
Although she did not win the event, Brynn Forsythe recorded the best throw in the shot put for the Trojans this season as she finished with a throw of 12.46 meters – 0.09 meters better than the previous best set by Nicole Studstill just two weeks ago. Both Forsythe (hammer) and Karen Wyatt (discus) reached the medal stand in their respective competitions.
On the men's side, Thaddeus Curtis ran in his first 100-meters race of the season and finished fourth overall. He recorded a personal best and the fifth fastest time at TROY this season, as he crossed the line in a time of 10.75 seconds. Meanwhile, in the 200-meters, Chris Upshaw ran a personal best and the third fastest time at the school this season, crossing the line in a time of 21.82 seconds.
In the men's 800-meters, Landry Key finished in a personal best time of 2:03.07; beating his previous time by almost a second, as he recorded the sixth fastest time at the school this season. Enock Kirui just missed on an overall championship, as he finished second in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:09.18; the fastest time in the event at TROY this season.
Curtis also finished with a school-best time of 15.16 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing with a personal best as he beat his time by 0.01 seconds. He was followed by Brandon Norwood with a time of 15.51 seconds, the sixth fastest at the school in 2011.
Grant Bullington finished with the a team-high clearance of 4.02 meters in the pole vault – beating his mark of 4.00 meters set at the FSU Relays two weeks ago. In other field events, Eddie Lynn set a new mark for 2011, as he finished with a distance of 14.62 meters in the shot put, beating the previous mark this season of 14.35 meters on the opening weekend. He also set a new mark for 2011 in the discus, as he finished fourth overall with a throw of 50.51 meters, beating a mark set in the second week of the season.
The Trojans return to action next week as they participate in-state for third consecutive week at the War Eagle Invitational. It will be the second meet in three weeks that the Trojans will compete in Auburn.
