TROY needs one win this weekend to clinch spot in Sun Belt Conference Tournament

DENTON, Texas (TroyTrojans.com) – The Troy University softball team ventures on the road for the final time in the regular season, facing the University of North Texas in a key Sun Belt Conference series beginning Saturday at Lovelace Stadium.
The games, originally scheduled for 2 and 4 pm on Saturday, have been moved up to 11 am and 1 pm due to inclement weather expected to hit the North Texas area late Saturday afternoon.
Both, TROY (28-23, 9-10 Sun Belt) and North Texas (20-28, 6-15 Sun Belt) need wins entering the weekend. One win by the Trojans assures TROY a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by virtue of being able to finish no lower than the eighth seed; while two wins by North Texas puts them back the race for the final spot.
Nonetheless, the two teams will match up Saturday afternoon with two of the best pitchers in the league on the mound. TROY senior Ashlyn Williams (15-13) leads the Sun Belt Conference in strikeouts this season, and is tied for 20th all-time in NCAA Division I history. Meanwhile, North Texas freshman Ashley Kirk is just three strikeouts away from setting a new single-season school record for strikeouts.
The Trojans are led at the plate by junior Nikki Hollett who is listed among the conference leaders in nine different categories, and is also listed in the top 50 in the nation in six different categories. Junior Hayden Gann and junior Michelle Hewett are both listed among the conference leaders; while freshmen Kelly Luquette and Taylor Smartt are among the league leaders, and are listed among the national leaders, in sacrifice hits and sacrifice flies.
