TROY, Ala. (TroyTrojans.com) – The Troy University track and field program will venture away from the norm this weekend, participating in a dual meet featuring student-athletes from South Alabama, Birmingham-Southern and Auburn. The meet takes place in Mobile, on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
The event begins at 10:30 Saturday morning, and continues through all of the track events with a rolling schedule beginning at 12:30 in the afternoon.
During the meet, each school is guaranteed two student-athletes in each lane-event. The next two spots will be awarded based on verifiable fast times. If a school does not have two student-athletes in an event, those spots will be awarded to the next fastest entrant.
In the throws and jumps competitions, the winner will be determined by four attempts; there will be no finals in any of the events.
The Trojans will look to improve on marks as this will be the last meet to prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships which start Mat 12 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The meet starts with the men's shot put and the women's hammer at 10:30 in the morning; followed by a host of events which roll throughout the day. To start the meet, the Trojans will send six different competitors out for the women's hammer – highlighted by Brynn Forsythe, who has posted a season-high throw of 50.13 meters. She is joined in the event by Karen Wyatt (48.21 meters) and Nicole Studstill (44.87 meters).
They will be joined by a trio of male student-athletes who will start the day in the shot put. The Trojans will send Scott Neal (13.50 meters), Kevin Benham (12.77 meters) and Caleb Osborne (11.41 meters) out for the competition on Saturday.
Some notable absences in the competition on Saturday include a trio of school record holders from this season; Cody Bahrke (hammer throw), Eddie Lynn (discus) and Martins Pildavs (javelin) on the men's side.
The jumps will get started around 10:30 with the women's long jump and the men's high jump kicking things off on the University of South Alabama campus. The Trojans will send a trio of student-athletes out for the women's long jump; including Coach O Invitational champion, Jasmine Patton (5.68 meters) and she will be joined by Ariel Cavazos (5.39 meters) and Kierra Lyles (4.79 meters). On the men's side, the high jump starts the meet off in the jumps and the Trojans will send their best, Larry Henry (2.07 meters) and Terrell Irons (1.90 meters) into competition – as Grant Bullington will be given the day off from competition to prepare for the decathlon in two weeks.
The Trojans will also send out their two 4x100-meter relay teams on Saturday to prepare for the Sun Belt Conference championships; looking to improve on both of their times, although the men's side is already one of the best in the East Region.
On the track, Neko Freeman highlights the field as he will be in the fast lane of the 100-meters; seeding first with a time of 10.37 seconds this season. He is joined in the field by Thaddeus Curtis with a time of 10.75 seconds, seeded fourth in the race. On the women's side, Ja-Courtney Alexander is seeded first in the 100-meters as she has run a time of 11.72 seconds this season.
In the middle distance competition, sophomore Enock Kirui will run in the 800-meters along with Landry Key and Shane George; each looking to improve on their time this season.
On the women's side, four student-athletes will look to bring home a medal in the 1500-meters as each will be seeded with one of the better times in the race. Sylvia Chirchir (4:55), Agnes Kapsoiyo (4:55), Allison Paulson (5:10) and Morgan Paulson (5:10) will all be entered into the race.
