A key Sun Belt Conference series for both teams starts Saturday with doubleheader

TROY, Ala. (TroyTrojans.com) – The Troy University softball team finds itself in the middle of a pack of teams battling for positioning for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and this weekend is another key conference series as they take on Florida Atlantic University.
TROY (25-19, 6-7 Sun Belt) enters the contest having won their last four conference games, and five of their last six; while Florida Atlantic (26-20, 10-5 Sun Belt) comes in off their first conference series loss of the season against South Alabama on Thursday.
The two teams have met 35 times previously in school history, but just 12 times since both teams joined the Sun Belt. During their time in the Sun Belt, the series is even at 6-all with one of those contests being won in the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Tournament by Florida Atlantic. The Trojans and Florida Atlantic have met 12 times at the Troy Softball Complex, with the series tied at 6-all.
Game Day Storylines: TROY head coach Melanie Davis is just one win away from 700 for her time her at Troy University, as she has recorded a 699-405-2 record during that time; she is also three victories away from 800 for her career … The Trojans won their first conference series of the season, actually clinching on Saturday by winning both games of the doubleheader. They went on to clinch the series sweep on Sunday with a six-inning 9-0 victory over the Lady Toppers … Junior Nikki Hollett connected on her league-leading 18th home run against WKU on Sunday, giving her 31 for her career and leaving her seven short of Heidi Johnson for second on the all-time list at the school … Freshman Lauren Griffith became the first Trojan to hit a walk-off since Sarah Harris did so two years ago … Senior Ashlyn Williams factored into all four games this week, recording three complete game victories and a save. Williams recorded two two-hitters and a four-hitter in her starts this week. She is now third all-time at the school in saves with eight career saves in her three-plus years of action for the Trojans.
Hollett Among the Nation's Best: Junior Nikki Hollett is among the nation's best this season in several categories, as she finds herself in the the top 75 in eight different categories and in the top 20 in five of those. She is in the top five in two categories, including home runs which is she ranked second with 18 - trailing only Hoku Nohara of New Mexico State with 19.
National Honor for Trojans: Senior Ashlyn Williams earned national recognition on Tuesday for her performance last week against South Alabama and WKU. The senior lefthander, who went 3-0 with one save in the four TROY games last week, was one of five players named as a Top Performer by the NFCA.
Snapping Out of It: Junior Hayden Gann snapped out of an 15-game RBI-less streak when she drove in Nikki Hollett in the top of the first inning against Alabama on Tuesday night. The junior had not driven in a run for the Trojans since driving in three against ULM on March 20. She is in the midst of an 11-game RBI-less streak in conference play, which dates back to the same game against the Warhawks at the Troy Softball Complex. During that time she has hit just .178.
Outfield Assists: Junior Sarah Harris recorded her first outfield assist of the season on Tuesday against Alabama, throwing out a runner on the infield. She joins freshman Kacie McAllister in that category, as the freshman has thrown two runners out at first and another out at third base this season - all from right field.
Admission to all three games at the Troy Softball Complex this weekend is free, with the first pitch set for 1 pm on Saturday (doubleheader) and 1 pm on Sunday. Live stats and live video will be provided by the Troy University Athletics Media Relations Office for all three games.
