On the heels of a career week during which he hit two grand slam homers and drove in 15 runs, Troy University sophomore first baseman Logan Pierce was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Pierce is the first Trojan to be recognized by the league as a player or pitcher of the week this season.
In addition to his league recognition, Pierce was one of seven players named by Collegiate Baseball as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the week.
Pierce opened his breakout week with four hits, including two doubles and a grand slam, driving in a career-high seven runs, against Auburn in a regionally televised game. The slam was his first homer of the year.
In Friday's series opener against FIU he had two more hits and drove in two runs in a 4-0 series-opening victory over the Panthers.
He followed up in the Sun Belt Game of the Week on Saturday with three more hits, six RBI, and his second grand slam of the week. His slam against FIU turned a 5-3 Panthers lead into a 7-5 Troy advantage in a game the Trojans won 9-5.
For the week Pierce had nine hits, scored four runs and drove in 15 while hitting .600 with a 1.133 slugging percentage and a 1.758 OPS. He more than doubled his season RBI total during the week. In addition to his offensive exploits, he was also flawless in 34 fielding chances.
The Trojans (25-6), who are ranked this week in all four major national polls for the first time in program history, will open a four-game road swing on Tuesday night at Jacksonville State. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start at Rudy Abbott Field on the JSU campus and will be broadcast over the Troy Sports Network with Barry McKnight on the call of the game.
The Trojans are ranked 18th in the latest Baseball America poll, 22nd in the Collegiate Baseball poll and debuted at No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll this week. The Trojans moved up two spots in the latest NCBWA poll and are ranked 27th this week.
Jacksonville State (22-10) comes into the game off a series win over Murray State. The Gamecocks have won seven of their last 10 games and are led offensively by junior first baseman Ben Waldrip with a .404 batting average, seven homers and 27 RBI.
The Trojans will send sophomore left-hander Shane McCain (1-1, 3.71) to the mound for his third consecutive mid-week start. McCain earned his first win since elbow surgery last spring with five solid innings of work against Auburn last week. He scattered nine hits and allowed just one run while striking out three in that outing.
JSU will counter with freshman left-hander Casey Antley (1-0, 5.32) in what will be his fifth start of the year.
Following the game at Jacksonville State, the Trojans will go back onto the road in Sun Belt Conference play to face Middle Tennessee this weekend in Murfreesboro. Game times for the series with the Blue Raiders are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast over the Troy Sports Network.
