For the second time this season, Troy junior Tyson Workman was called to the mound in the late innings of a close game on Saturday. For the second time, he delivered, both on the mound and at the plate.
The Tallahassee, Fla., native delivered an infield single in the 10th inning at Riddle-Pace Field to drive in Josh McDorman for the winning run in a 2-1 victory over Southeast Missouri State. Workman (2-0) picked up the win with two shutout innings of work in relief of starter Drew Hull.
The Trojans (8-2) will go for the series sweep over the Redhawks (7-4) on Sunday. Either Ryan Sorce or Shane McCain, both sophomore left-handers, will take the mound for Troy against senior right-hander Nick Thomas of SEMO. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
“This was just another well-pitched game today,” Trojans head coach Bobby Pierce said. “You have to credit the pitchers for both teams for going out there and throwing strikes and limiting opportunities to score runs.”
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision on Saturday. Troy's Drew Hull worked eight innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits while tying his career high with nine strikeouts. SEMO's Jon Dicus worked into the sixth innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts.
The Redhawks turned to senior left-hander Logan Mahon (1-2) in the sixth inning and held the Trojans to just one hit until the 10th inning and struck out four.
In the 10th, McDorman led off with a double off the wall in right. After Daniel Peterson was unable to move McDorman to third, Adam Bryant was intentionally walked to bring Workman to the plate. He delivered with a single up the middle with both McDorman and Bryant running on the play. SEMO shortstop Kenton Parmley was able to knock the ball down in shallow center, but was unable to recover in time to prevent McDorman from scoring.
“Tyson is a guy who doesn't strikeout very much, so we put the runners in motion in case he was able to find a hole,” Pierce said. “Their shortstop did a great job of getting to the ball. If we had not been running, we would not have been able to score.
“Tyson must really love hitting in that situation because it is the second time this year he has knocked in a run to give himself a win.”
Neither team managed to generate much offensively. The Trojans scored their first run in the third inning when Workman, who reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a T.J. Rivera single, scored on a passed ball.
Southeast Missouri got that run back in the fifth after Taylor Heon singled to right and Workman misplayed the ball, allowing Heon to reach second. After Hull retired the next two Redhawks hitters, Parmely singled to drive in the run.
Rivera had three hits in the game to lead the Trojans while Tyler Hannah had two. Trenton Moses, who had to leave the game after legging out an infield single in the 10th, had two hits to lead the Redhawks.
