Trojans defeat in-state rival without dropping a set in singles play

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Troy University men's tennis team returned to their winning ways on Tuesday, blanking Jacksonville State 7-0 on the road in non-conference tennis action.

The Trojans claimed the doubles point by losing just three games in the two matches that decided the outcome. The number one team of Branko Weber and Mario Rolemberg defeated Jacksonville State's Brian Kenyon and Gustavo Holz, 8-3, to set up the clinching point. The point was decided when the number three team of Sami Ghorbel and Niklas Jonsson defeated Jacksonville State's Eric Matthierson and Felipe Watanbe 8-0.

After the doubles point was decided, the number two team from Jacksonville State (Nenad Marcec and Axel Sundberg) defeated Troy's Jamie Eccleton and Anas Rouchdi, 8-7.

In singles play, the Trojans did not drop a set to Jacksonville State led by Anas Rouchdi at number one; as he defeated Jacksonville State's Brian Kenyon 7-6, 6-4. At number two, Jamie Eccleton defeated Jacksonville State's Axel Sundberg 6-4, 6-0.

The sweep continued in the middle singles matches, as at number three, Branko Weber defeated Jacksonville State's Nenad Marcec 7-6, 6-1; while at number four, Sami Ghorbel defeated Jacksonville State's Gustavo Holz 6-1, 6-3.

The sweep was complete as the Trojans won the bottom draw of singles play with Mario Rolemberg winning 7-5, 7-6 at number five; and Niklas Jonsson winning 6-2, 6-4 at number six singles.

The Trojans return to action at the Sun Belt Shootout which begins on April 2. This year, the Shootout is hosted by Middle Tennessee State University.
