The Troy University women's golf team will head to Hot Springs, Ark., this weekend for its third event in as many weeks, the UALR Women's Golf Classic.
The Trojans, who earned a share of the Samford Intercollegiate title two weeks ago before finishing third at the Lady Eagle Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss., last week. The Trojans will compete against a 19-team field that includes five of the Sun Belt Conference teams they will see in April at the Sun Belt Championship.
The tournament will be held at the Diamante Country Club, which will play to a par 72 over 5.971 yards.
Trojans coach Matt Terry said he expects to see his team continue to make strides.
“It is a very nice course, one that has hosted a Nationwide event,” Terry said. “The girls like the course and have played well there in the past. We are playing better now than we have been playing in the past going there. The girls have a chance to go up there and be successful, but we still have to go see what we can do.”
The teams will play practice rounds on Sunday before opening play with 36 holes of competition on Monday. The tournament will close with a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
The Trojans have flirted with breaking the 300 mark since the start of the spring season, but have never quite been able to get over the hump. A 313 in the final round in Hattiesburg snapped a streak of six consecutive rounds of 309 or less.
“We play so good in spurts that it offers hope,” Terry said. “We are good enough to be a 295 team, but we have to find a way to get through that barrier.”
After playing in warm weather conditions for much of the spring, the Trojans will be faced with cooler temperatures as well as a wet golf course when they get to Hot Springs.
“It is going to be a little cooler than it has been and it will be wet, but we need to prove to those other conference teams that we can compete with them,” Terry said. For the first time we can put a scare into teams in the league this year if we play like we are capable.”
Other teams scheduled to play in the UALR Classic include: Arkansas State, UALR, Ball State, Central Arkansas, Eastern Michigan, FIU, Lamar, ULM, Middle Tennessee, Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, UTEP, UT-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Western Michigan and Wichita State.
