Multi-Athletes Finish Second and Fourth

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FSU Relays and Combined Events finished up the heptathlon and decathlon on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Florida State University, and the Troy University track and field program walked away with a runner-up finish and a fourth place finish.
Senior Grant Bullington entered the final day of the decathlon leading the event, however, Conner Smith of South Alabama was able to overtake Bullington and win the decathlon by just 51 points. Bullington finished with 6,162 points; just behind Smith at 6.213 points and ahead of Ashton Krause of South Alabama at 6,144 points.
The senior opened the day with a personal-best in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.62 seconds and earning 776 points. He followed that up with 435 points in the discus as he finished with distance of 38.52 meters (93-07.00), and 617 points in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.00 meters (13-01.05).
Bullington also finished with a throw of 42.85 meters (140-07.00) to pull in 484 points, and set the stage for the final event. Heading into the final event, Bullington needed to finish first and have Smith finish fourth, or to finish second and Smith finish fifth in order to win the overall event. Bullington did his part by finishing second in the 1500-meters with a time of 5:17.40 to pull in 464 points, but Smith finished three seconds ahead of teammate Krause to finish fourth and capture the overall event.
Meanwhile, Veronica Bryant held on to her fourth place finish, the position she entered the day in on Thursday, with a performances in the long jump, javelin and 800-meters.
After the first event of the day – the long jump – Bryant found herself in fourth place overall, and third among collegiate athletes with 3,318 points. Bryant was able to stay in front of Kylie Kopp of Wright State as she earned 565 points with a jump of 5.02 meters (16-05.75) to finish sixth in the event.
She followed that up with a sixth place finish in the javelin, as she finished with a distance of 25.37 meters (83-03.00) for 389 points; before finishing the day with an eighth place finish in the 800-meters in a time of 2:41.58 which earned Bryant 555 points.
The sophomore finished as the fourth overall participant, but made the medal stand among collegiate athletes as she finished third. Bryant finished with 4,262 points, finishing just 50 points behind Rachael Klinger of South Florida (4,312 points) and 516 points behind Lindsay Schwartz of South Alabama (4,778 points). The overall champion was Rachel Etienne with 4,784 points in the two-day event.
The FSU Relays continues on Friday and Saturday from Tallahassee and the campus of Florida State University, on the Mike Long Track.
